This depends on the phone used. The latest Nokia phones are able to keep personal data in place - but there is an issue with older phones. It is highly recommended to take a backup before the firmware update.
If the applications were downloaded from Nokia Store you can easily redownload them by signing into Nokia Store website and accessing My Stuff.
Creating a new synchronisation task involves selecting the PC application that you want to synchronise with a phone, and defining synchronisation settings. If you do not make changes to the synchronisation settings, the settings for the last selected synchronisation task will be used. To create a new synchronisation task follow the steps:
In Advanced settings you see the followings tabs:
It is possible that you have modified an item on your mobile phone and on the PC. Here you can specify whether information is to be synchronised from your mobile phone to the PC or vice versa if a field of an item has been changed on both databases. Select the database that you want to synchronise information from:
You can specify the direction of the synchronisation. You can update information to both directions in synchronisation, only from a mobile phone to the PC, or only from the PC to a mobile phone.
The Bluetooth media module searches for all the devices that have been paired with the PC. If some of these devices are no longer within range, the search may take a while. To prevent this from happening, you can use the unpairing function to clear the unwanted devices from the list.

Creating a Custom Contact List
If you have more contacts in your Personal Information Manager (PIM) than your phone book memory can hold, synchronizing may overload your phone book memory.
You can create a custom contact list or subset of your master contact list containing only the information you want in your phone. Depending on the PIM application you use, you may need to create a new contact database file or create a new folder to store the custom contact list.
Configuring for Outlook users
Microsoft Outlook users can create folders and sub-folders in their Outlook database files. To create a custom contact list, first create a new folder to store contacts. Then copy the desired contact information from your main contacts folder to the new folder. Nokia PC Suite 7.1 PC Sync allows you to synchronize your phone with the Outlook contacts folder of your choosing.

Nokia 6500 Classic (RM-265) is approaching ramp down and there will be no new software releases. The solution is to take device to Nokia Care Point (NCP) and do a hard reinstall of the previous software version.
This is a known issue which has appeared more then once. At this moment Nokia PC Suite 7.1.18 does not contain support for "Contact Groups" content transfer from one type of phone to another. This feature is expected to be added in the next version 7.1.2x.
In order to avoid any data loss, confirm all contacts that belong to a Contact Group are also present in phonebook. If you delete a contact from the phonebook it will be deleted also from the Contact Group, but if you remove it from the Contact Group it will not be deleted from the phonebook. If you have to transfer data from one type of device to another using Nokia PC Suite then it is mandatory that you preserve all contacts in phonebook for future use. Until the release of next version of PC Suite users will have to recreate all Contact Groups present in their previous device. In order to do this follow the steps:
In order to fix this, you can try performing the following steps:
