If your Nokia N97 device is showing messages like "Memory full. Delete or move some data from C: Phone memory" or "Memory low. Delete or move some data from C: Phone memory", you can try to increase the amount of free phone memory (C: Phone memory) as described below.
With phone software version 20.x.019 and later it is possible to free some memory by running the Memory reorganiser application. The application will move some of the data files and applications from C: Phone memory to E: Mass memory. The application is available for downloading via the SW Update application for version 20.x.019 and later. If an older phone software version is in use, the software must be upgraded first. The current software version can be checked by typing in the command *#0000#.
Memory reorganiser can be run in the following way:
When the reorganisation of the memory has been completed, the Memory reorganiser application will remove itself automatically.
If Memory reorganiser is not available via SW Update menu, the memory reorganisation may already have been performed in your device. This can be checked in Menu > Settings > Application mgr. > Installed apps. where the application Reorganiser Uninstaller can be found if the reorganisation has already been completed.
If the Memory reorganiser is not available for your device or it doesn't help, check the following:
The available free phone memory can be viewed in File Manager by selecting Menu > Applications > Office > File mgr. and checking the free memory status of C: Phone memory. The memory usage details can be viewed by selecting C: Phone memory > Options > Details > Memory.
If it is not possible to release enough memory and it's desired to restore the device to the original state, the device can be reset by typing *#7370# in standby mode. Before the device is reset, you need to provide the lock code. The default lock code is 12345. Resetting the device will permanently erase all user data and settings as well as add-on applications and operator specific settings. The mass memory (E:) and memory card (F:) contents will be preserved. It is recommended to take a backup before resetting the device.
GPS (Global Positioning System) problems, lost GPS signal or poor GPS reception may occur if the GPS antenna gets covered by hand or something else. This can heavily affect the GPS performance.
The GPS antenna in Nokia N97 is located under the camera module area. Care should be taken to avoid covering the antenna. For example, when holding the device by two hands when the device is folded open, the left hand could easily cover the GPS antenna and cause performance issues.
If using Maps application, check also that the latest version is installed in the device to be sure that all the GPS performance improvements of the Maps application are included. Maps updates can be checked and installed by going to Menu > Applications > SW Update.
Note that there can be also other issues affecting the GPS performance, e.g.:
If not getting GPS signal, try moving to an open place with clear view to the sky. Check also that Assisted GPS is enabled in the positioning methods, this will substantially speed up getting the GPS fix (select Menu > Settings > Phone > Application sett. > Positioning > Positioning methods > Assisted GPS). Note that there will be a small amount of data transferred over the internet connection with Assisted GPS and data charges may incur.
A data connection is automatically established when the online mode has been selected in the home screen settings. The home screen widgets can then automatically fetch the latest information from internet and show it on the home screen.
The automatic data connection can be disabled by selecting the offline mode in the home screen settings:
Note that the data connection may be opened automatically also by some other applications, for example by the email clients. The home screen setting doesn't affect the connections opened by these applications.
To disable the automatic email updates, go to email settings and change the synchronisation frequency (e.g. by selecting Sync frequency > Update interval > Manual).
Select Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone mgmt. > Factory settings.
You can reset some of the settings to their original values. To do this, you need the lock code, which is 12345 by default unless you have changed it before.
After resetting, the device may take a longer time to power on. Documents and files are unaffected.
To reset some of the settings to their original values, select (depending on your device):
To do this, you need the lock code. The default lock code is 12345. After resetting, the device may take a longer time to power on. Documents and files are unaffected.
Note: If your Nokia device support encryption of the device memory or the memory card, make sure you decrypt them before you restore the factory setting or your data may be lost.
Conference call is a network service, make sure that the conference call is supported by your network operator or service provider before following the steps below.
To make a conference call on your device:
Note: to mute the microphone of your device during the conference call, in the active call mode, select Options > Mute.
SMS message may get converted to MMS message in the following situations:
1) When sending a long SMS message
In some devices the message type gets converted from SMS text message to MMS multimedia message if the message length exceeds the device-specific setting which is typically 5 - 10 SMS submessages (around 760-1520 characters). If the message is longer, it is converted to MMS to avoid potential issues in handling long text messages in the recipient device. The cost of a SMS message consisting of several concatenated submessages may also be higher than the cost of a single MMS message.
The conversion from SMS text message to MMS multimedia message occurs when the automatic message type is selected in the message options. This is the default mode where the device tries to automatically select the best mode for the message.
The conversion from SMS to MMS can be avoided by selecting Options > Sending options > Message type > Text when in the Text message window writing the message. The message is then always sent as SMS text message and no conversion to MMS occurs.
The maximum number of concatenated SMS submessages can be up to 10 (around 1520 characters). In multimedia mode the message length can be longer.
2) No phone number defined in user contact information
If sending SMS to one or more recipients and one of the potential recipients has only email address and no phone number, the SMS will be converted to MMS. This is independent of the number of the potential recipients.
In order to avoid the conversion to MMS, remove from the recipient list the contacts which don't have a phone number defined.
If the packet data indicator on the device display becomes active even though there is no application connecting to internet, the device may be trying to retrieve a multimedia message from the multimedia message centre. To stop the device from making a data connection, select Menu > Messaging > Options > Settings > Multimedia message > Multimedia retrieval. Select Manual to have the multimedia messaging centre save messages to be retrieved later, or Off to ignore all incoming multimedia messages. If you select Manual, you receive a notification when you have a new message in the multimedia message centre. If you select Off, the device does not make any network connections related to multimedia messaging.
If the packet data indicator is constantly active, check if the packet data connection is configured to be constantly on. To set the device to activate a packet data connection only if you start an application or action that needs it,select Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Admin.settings > Packet data > Packet data connection > When needed. If you select When available and you are in a network that supports packet data, the device registers to the packet data network always when the network is available. Starting an active packet data connection (for example, to send and receive e-mail) is then quicker than if the device establishes a packet data connection when needed.
If the above settings don't help, switch the device off and then on again.
Note that there can also be an application in your device that automatically connects to internet, e.g. the home screen widgets or email client. If you don't want the connection to be automatically established, change the connection settings in the applications (e.g. disable automatic synchronisation in email client and select Options > Widgets to offline mode in home screen).
No. The amount of consecutive incorrect lock codes is not limited and you cannot lock your Nokia device permanently by entering wrong lock codes. However, if you enter the wrong lock code for 5 consecutive times, the device is locked for 5 minutes during which time it doesn't accept any codes, not even the correct one.
Note that some applications may add security measures of their own if an incorrect lock code is given too many times. For example with Mail for Exchange the administrator can define that all the data in the device is deleted when a maximum number of lock code retries is reached. The device may show in this situation the following warning message:
Incorrect lock code. One attempt left before data is deleted.
If a wrong lock code is still given after the above warning, the device is reset and all the user data is wiped out.
Make sure you do it in the right place.
Note: If you remove an application, you can only reinstall it if you have the original application or a full backup of the removed application. If you remove an application, you may no longer be able to open documents created with that application. If another application depends on the application that you removed, the other application may stop working.
Note also that you may not be able to uninstall applications that came pre-installed in your phone.
