Quick guide to Nokia Messaging for instant messaging for Nokia S40 devices

With Nokia Messaging for instant messaging you can instant message other online users using your mobile device. You must already have an existing account with an instant messaging community.

The menus may vary depending on the instant messaging community.

Sign in to an instant messaging community

Select Menu > Messaging > Chat.
Select the community that you want to sign in to.
Enter your Account ID and Password.
Select Sign In.

Create a new account on Ovi

If you do not already have a Nokia account, you can create one by visiting www.ovi.com
You can also create an account directly from Nokia Messaging for e-mail (by selecting Menu > Messaging > Mail).
Once you have created your account, you can sign in to Nokia Messaging for instant messaging and start chatting to friends.

Select additional communities

You can sign in to multiple instant messaging communities and switch between communities easily.

To sign in to another community, select Home from within any community to return to the Nokia Messaging for instant messaging Home screen. Then, select the community you want to sign in to.
To switch between communities, press the left or right scroll key in the contact list view.

Send an instant message

Select a contact from your contact list. A conversation window appears. Each conversation is presented as a tab in the conversation view.
Enter your message in the text box at the bottom of the display.
When finished, select Send.

New message alerts

Depending on your conversation status, there are several methods by which you will be notified that there is a new message.

When a new message arrives in your current conversation tab, the message appears at the end of the chat history.

When a new message arrives for another conversation, the conversation tab flashes. To switch between conversations, press the up scroll key to move the focus to the conversation tabs. Then press the left or right scroll key to access a conversation.

When a new message arrives from another community, the top or bottom corner of the screen peels back, depending on where you are in the application. To see the message, press the up scroll key and Select or, if available, Switch.

Even when you are not using the application, you are notified of new messages. Depending on your notification settings, you may receive an audible alert or your device will vibrate.

To configure your notification settings:

From the Nokia Messaging for instant messaging Home screen, select Options > Chat Settings.
Check the desired settings.
To keep your new settings, select Save.

These settings apply to the Nokia Messaging for instant messaging application only and do not change other settings that you have specified on your device.

Access your e-mail account from Nokia Messaging for instant messaging

With some communities, you can access your e-mail account directly from your IM account.

Leave the application

When you leave the application by selecting Exit from the Nokia Messaging for instant messaging Home screen you are still signed in to your communities. Your session will remain active for a period of time, according to your service subscription. While the application is still active, you can access another application and return without having to sign in again.

To sign out of an instant messaging community, select Options > Sign out from within the community.

To get help on Nokia Messaging for instant messaging features, select Options > Help.
