Launching the application

1. How do I access the application?

On most devices, the application should be available by selecting Menu > Messaging > Chat. On some devices, the application is available by selecting Menu > Messaging > More > Chat.

2. Do I need to register somewhere before I can use the application?

When you open the application for the first time, you need to enter the user name and password you normally use to access your instant messaging community.

If you do not already have a registered instant messaging identity with a community, you can get one online using either your PC or your mobile device browser. Close the application, and return once you have registered for the community.

3. Do I need to remember my user name or e-mail address and password?

Once you enter your user name or e-mail address, your device stores it for subsequent sessions. If you select the Save password check box, your password is also saved.

If you select Options > Sign Out instead of Exit in the Nokia Messaging for instant messaging Home view, you will need to sign in again. However, the last user name or e-mail address you provided is displayed by default.

4. How can I stop Nokia Messaging for instant messaging from signing in automatically?

  1. Sign out of the application (select Options > Sign Out).
  2. The next time you sign in, clear the check box beside the auto sign-in option on the Sign In view.

If there is a check box beside the auto-start option, clear that too.

5. How do I sign in with a different user name or e-mail address?

To chat using another instant messaging identity, you need to sign out. Select Options > Sign Out. You are asked to confirm whether you want to end your session and end all active conversations. Once you confirm, the Sign In view is displayed, and you can enter another user name or e-mail address and password.

6. Why can't I access all my instant messaging communities?

Access to some instant messaging communities is limited. Contact your wireless service provider for more details.

7. How do I use Nokia Messaging for instant messaging with a different community?

When you use Nokia Messaging for instant messaging, you are not restricted to only one community – you can sign in to many communities at the same time.

To sign in to another community, select Home and the community you want to sign in to.

8. I am signed in to more than one community; how do I switch between them?

Once you have made your community selections, you can move from one community to another. The left and right arrows next to the header indicate that you can use your left and right scroll keys to move to another community. The arrows are not displayed when you are in an input field, such as the Password field.

9. How can I be sure my device is running the latest software?

To check the current version of your software, in the Sign In view, select Options > About. The latest version of your device’s software is always available at europe.nokia.com/softwareupdate

Privacy and security

1. How can I help protect my privacy?

The application protects your details at all times, from your encrypted password to the content of your contacts list and conversations.

You must also authorise requests to be added to other people’s contacts lists. Other users will not see information about when you are online until you authorise this request. You can block people from communicating with you and from seeing when you’re online.

Some communities offer tips on protecting your privacy. For more information, consult your community’s website.

2. Who can see my availability status and contact information?

Anyone in your Nokia Messaging for instant messaging contacts list can see when you’re available, as well as some of your contact information, unless you block them.

3. Can other users see my phone number?

No. Your contacts can see some information about whether you’re online when they select Options > Contact Info, but this information does not list your mobile phone number.

4. Can a contact I removed from my list still send me messages?

Contacts removed from your Nokia Messaging for instant messaging contacts list can still send you messages. If you no longer want to receive messages or share presence information with a contact, you should block that contact.

The best way to prevent someone from communicating with you is to block them, rather than remove them from your list.

5. I no longer want to send or receive messages from a particular contact. What should I do?

If you no longer want to send or receive messages from a contact, block that person.

Blocked contacts no longer receive your presence information and you will not see theirs. They see you as unavailable or offline at all times.

6. How can I keep people I don’t know from sending me messages?

The best way to protect your privacy is to limit the number of contacts who can see your information. Add to your contacts list only those people you want to communicate with.

Also, give only people you trust your user name or e-mail address (depending on the community you use), as anyone with this information can send you an instant message.

Using Nokia Messaging for instant messaging

1. What happens if I choose not to accept an invitation?

If you decline an invitation, the user is not added to your contacts list and is blocked from communicating with you. The user can neither send you messages nor see when you’re online. Blocked contacts do not know they have been blocked; you appear offline or unavailable to them.

2. What happens if a user I added to my contacts list declines my invitation?

If a user to whom you sent an invitation declines your request, the user will always appear as offline or unavailable in your contacts list.

3. When I add friends to my list, am I automatically added to theirs?

No. When you add a new contact, the contact appears offline or unavailable in your contacts list and an invitation is automatically sent to that contact. Only when the invitation is accepted, do you see the contact in your contacts list.

This authorisation process protects your contact’s privacy and yours too.

When your invitation is accepted, you are added to your friend’s contacts list and you will see when they are online By adding a contact, you implicitly grant that contact authorisation to view your information, if your contact accepts your invitation.

If your friend does not accept your invitation, you are not added to your their contacts list, and your friend continues to remain offline or unavailable in yours.

4. Will a phone call disturb my instant messaging conversations and incoming messages?

No. In most cases, incoming calls neither end conversations nor disturb them. Once the call is finished, you can return to the conversation. Similarly, outgoing calls, text messages, and instant messages should not disturb incoming instant messages. You cannot actively send instant messages while the call is in progress.

5. If I lose the signal, will my messages and conversations be lost?

No. Should you lose connectivity, your instant messages and conversations remain undisturbed.

6. How am I notified of new messages when the application is in the background?

Depending on your device settings and Nokia Messaging for instant messaging settings, you are notified of new messages by an audible alert, the vibration of your device, or a notification on your device’s screen.

7. If I set my device to silent, will I still hear a sound when I receive new messages?

The application respects your mobile device’s audio settings. If your device is in silent mode, the application won’t make a sound when you receive a new message.

8. If I change my status to unavailable or offline, will I continue to receive new messages?

If you change your status to unavailable or offline, your contacts see you as unavailable or offline. They can still send you messages and you will receive them the next time you sign in.

9. Can I send a message to someone who is not in my contacts list?

Yes. You are not restricted to sending instant messages to contacts that appear in your contacts list. You can send a message to any member of the same community for whom you have a valid user name or e-mail address.

10. I received an error message telling me to free up memory. What do I do?

Stored data, such as saved conversations, images and other media, is subject to storage limitations. You need to increase the available memory on your mobile device.

You can increase the available memory by:

  • deleting previously saved conversations
  • closing other open conversations without saving
  • moving files and data to external storage (PC, memory cards, for example)
  • deleting other files stored on your device

11. What is the difference between predictive and multitap text input? Which is better?

Predictive text input is intended to reduce the number of key presses, making it easier to type text messages on mobile devices. It allows you to enter words by a single key press for each letter, as opposed to the more traditional approach, the multitap text input method.

With multitap text input, several letters are associated with each key, and selecting one letter often requires multiple key presses. Using a dictionary, the application attempts to predict commonly used words and phrases.

As for which text input method is the best – that is a personal choice. Predictive text is meant to save time and energy, but if you prefer multitap text input it is easy to switch between methods.

12. Can I call a contact directly from an instant messaging conversation?

Depending on your device, you may be able to start a voice call with a contact directly from the application. You must have a mobile number for that contact stored in your mobile device contacts list to use this feature.
