How can I find out which version of Nokia Maps my device is using?

There are three different versions of Nokia Maps: Maps 2.0, Maps 1.0 and Maps for S40. You can find your Nokia Maps version by selecting Options > About in Nokia Maps. Discover the latest version your device is compatible with on our Compatibility & Download pages

How do I navigate with GPS?

To navigate using Nokia Maps your mobile device will need a built-in GPS receiver, or an external GPS module.

With a Bluetooth GPS module paired to your mobile device you can determine your current position and direction easily, and upgrade to voice-guided turn-by turn navigation on Nokia Maps.

Before you start using an external GPS module, please make sure you read the user guide for the module and for the mobile device you intend to use it with.

How do I pair the GPS module for use with Nokia Maps?

Before you can use Nokia Maps with a compatible external GPS receiver, you must pair it with your compatible mobile device. Open Nokia Maps and select Current position and Yes to connect via Bluetooth.

How do I pair the GPS module using the Bluetooth menu

To pair the external GPS module in the Bluetooth menu:

  1. Ensure that the GPS module and your compatible mobile device are switched on.
  2. Activate the Bluetooth feature on the mobile device, and set it to search for Bluetooth devices.
  3. Select the GPS module from the list of mobile devices found.
  4. Enter the passcode 0000* to pair and connect the GPS module to your mobile device. In some devices you may need to make the connection separately after pairing. You only need to pair the GPS module with your device once.
  5. Start using the GPS application.

When your external GPS module has successfully connected to your mobile device via Bluetooth, the Bluetooth indicator light flashes blue.*

How do I get my position?

Switch on your compatible external GPS receiver by pressing and holding the power key for one second until the battery indicator light starts to flash green. If you have an inbuilt GPS receiver, it is located under your devices keypad*. Ensure nothing covers the keypad when trying to receive a GPS fix.

It takes some time for the module to position itself first time, or if it has been switched off a long time. In optimal conditions, the start-up takes about one minute. When the module is receiving satellite signals, the GPS indicator light flashes white.*

How do I activate navigation?

Many new Nokia devices let you try navigation for the region in which they are purchased for a limited time period. Please check with your local Nokia dealer for further details

Your navigation service starts when you activate it:

  1. Select Options > Extras > Drive & Walk
  2. Accept the terms and conditions
  3. Select Download
  4. Connect to the internet to check the availability for trial services*
  5. Click OK to start navigating

*If the region in which you purchased your device has non-navigable maps, you will be prompted to select another navigation service from a list of navigable regions.

How do I purchase navigation?

You can also purchase navigation direct from your device. Simply browse the map or search for your destination then follow these steps to start navigating.

  1. Select your destination by pressing the centre of the navigation key
  2. Select Drive to for Drive & Walk navigation
  3. Accept the terms and conditions
  4. Connect to the internet to update your purchase options
  5. Select your desired license period
  6. Select your preferred payment method
  7. Click OK to start navigating

How do I use the search feature in Maps 2.0?

These instructions guide you through the search feature in Maps 2.0.

You can begin searching and use the One Box Search of Nokia Maps 2.0 as soon as your map appears on the screen. The One Box Search is one of several ways to search for places near your current location.

Simply type in a keyword. The first few characters may be all you need to find what you want. To start searching, select Search. Nokia Maps shows you the results, which are chosen using your GPS position. If GPS is unavailable, the results are based the location of your cursor on the Map screen.

The places you discover are listed based on their proximity to your location, with the nearest first. If there are a lot of places, Maps lists them under convenient categories. Choose a place that appeals to you by using the navigation keys of your device. You can then choose to walk to or drive to your destination, show it on the map or display more details.

These instructions guide through using the Search by category feature in Nokia Maps 2.0. Start by going to Options and selecting Search

There are six categories to help you. To speed up your search, Nokia Maps always lists the places nearest to you first. Favourites holds all the places and routes you've marked on Nokia Maps. You can also rediscover places you've found and routes that you've made under History. Addresses lets you type in a specific street and a specific number, city or postcode and locate them quickly on the map.

Walk and Drive list places nearby that may be handy when you are on foot or in the car. Walk shows you public transport options, ATM's and interesting sights around the corner from you. Drive lists nearby petrol stations, parking, rest areas and other services you might need on the road

Guides are purchasable enhancements from premium travel guide publishers giving you extra insight to a new city straight to your device. Places gives you a whole directory of categorized locations like Eating & Erinking, Going out & Entertainment, Sights & Museums, Transport, Accommodation and more. Each category is subdivided to help you pinpoint what you need, so Accommodation includes Luxury, Standard, Moderate, Motel and Camping. The choice is yours!

However you search, select a place that appeals to you by using the center Navi key. You can then choose to walk to or drive to your destination, show it on the map, add it to your places or to a route and display contact details.

How do I use Drive navigation?

Nokia Maps offers you Drive>, real time turn-by-turn car navigation. These instructions guide through using the Drive navigation feature in Nokia Maps 2.0. You start right where you've parked. Drive uses your GPS position to begin your route, so you'll need GPS fix to get moving.

here are three ways to find your destination. You can choose a place or driving route you already know from your Favourites menu. Or you can use the Navi key to scroll over your map to find the location you want to drive to. And you can use Nokia Maps so search for your destination too.

When you've found where you want to go, press the center Navi key and then choose Drive to. Nokia Maps then calculates the driving route to your destination. Once you are on your way, Drive directs you turn-by-turn with visual and voice guida

At the top of your screen the information panel shows you the name of the street you need to take next, the distance to the turn and which direction you need to turn. At the bottom of your screen, the information panel shows you the street you are currently on, your speed and the distance and driving time to your destination.

You can switch between different drive views (arrow view, manouver view or bird's eye view) using the center Navi key. For further map, route and voice guidance related options, please press the Options key.

How do I use Walk navigation?

To purchase a license for pedestrian navigation, select Options > Extras > Walk. The license is regionspecific and can be used only in the selected area. You can pay for the license through a credit card or in your phone bill, if supported by your service provider.

To start navigating, scroll to a location, press the scroll key, and select Walk to. This service is available when you have purchased it.

To find an alternative route, select Options > Different route.

To stop navigating, select Stop navigation.

How do I start using A-GPS with Maps on my mobile device with internal GPS receiver?

When you use Nokia Maps for the first time, you have to define an internet access point for downloading map information and using A-GPS. The device asks: Access point is required for secure positioning. Define now? or Assisted GPS and network based positioning requires a network connection. Enable network usage and define access point now?. The question depends on your device. To define the access point that A-GPS will use, select Yes. If you select No, you can define the access point later: select Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Positioning > Positioning Methods > Assisted GPS.

How do I disable A-GPS with Maps on my mobile device with internal GPS receiver?

You can disable A-GPS and use standalone GPS instead.

To disable A-GPS, select Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Positioning > Positioning Methods > Assisted GPS.

How can I get the A-GPS to my mobile device with internal GPS receiver?

To download the updated software that has the A-GPS settings built in, use the Nokia Software Updater. It is a free PC application, which allows you to update the device software on compatible Nokia devices.
