How to use Widgets

Installing widgets

There are two different ways to install widgets:

  • Install widgets directly to your mobile device.
  • Download widgets to your PC and install from your PC.

NOTE!: You cannot install widgets with the Nokia Application Installer as it does not support the WGZ file format.

Install widgets directly to your mobile device

  1. On your mobile device, open the Download! application, and select Widgets.
  2. Select a widget you want to install.
  3. Select Options > Get. The installation file is downloaded to your device.
  4. Select whether to save the file to the device memory or to a memory card (if inserted).
  5. Confirm the installation.
  6. Select where to install the widget.
  7. Wait until the installation is complete.
  8. You can now access the installed widget in the Applications folder.

Install widgets to your mobile device from a PC

  1. Download a widget installation file to your PC. The installation files have the file extension .wgz, such as weatherbug.wgz.
  2. Open Nokia PC Suite and transfer the installation file to your mobile device.
  3. Browse your device and click the transferred installation file to start the installation.
  4. Confirm the installation.
  5. Select where to install the widget.
  6. Wait until the installation is complete.
  7. You can now access the installed widget in the Applications folder.

Interacting with widgets

You can interact with a widget in several ways, depending on the widget functions:

  • Use a pointer, as you would in the browser application.
  • Use tabs, as you would in other applications, such as messaging or calendar.

Defining an internet access point for a widget

Some widgets require internet connectivity. If all the resources that the widget needs can be installed on the device, no network connection is needed. For example, many game widgets do not require a network connection. Widgets requiring network connectivity share the network settings with your default Nokia Browser application. The widgets either ask which internet access point (IAP) to use, or use the default IAP. To change the settings for widgets, change the settings for the browser.

Sharing widgets

To share a widget, do the following:

  • Send the widget installation file to your friend. The filename extension is .wgz, such as weatherbug.wgz.
  • Send the file from your PC or mobile device using e-mail or Bluetooth connectivity.

Updating widgets

To update a widget, download and install a new version of it. This overwrites the previous installation, therefore you may lose settings stored in the widget. To preserve your widgets when you update the software of your mobile device, back up the content of your device before the update. After the update, restore the content from the backup.

Removing widgets

Select the widget icon in your device menu, and press C, or select Options > Remove. This uninstalls the widget from your device, but not the widget installation package file (.wgz file).

Creating widgets

With some software developer skills, the widgets are easy to create and they allow you to personalise your device. For more information, see the Forum Nokia website at www.forum.nokia.com.
