Bluetooth security

Nokia takes all security issues seriously, and we constantly develop and integrate advanced security features in our products.

Nokia is closely following the attempts to hack Bluetooth and any developments in this area. To date, the potentially affected Nokia models include the Nokia 6310, 6310i, 6650, 8910 and 8910i mobile phones, the Nokia 610 car kit phone, and the Nokia 810 car phone.

Even though Nokia believes the real security risk is very small, we are introducing a software upgrade to ensure security in Bluetooth devices in the above mentioned phone models.

To get an upgrade, owners of the above mentioned phone models may contact the Nokia Customer Care Line in your home country or an authorized Nokia Service Point.

The Bluetooth standard has strong security mechanisms built into it encompassing authentication, authorization and encryption. While complying with established industry standards, Nokia is committed to conducting extensive testing, research and development to further enhance the security features, including devices with Bluetooth technology. These measures are also designed to foil hackers who promote malicious or criminal security attacks against mobile devices.

Tips to Enhance Bluetooth Security
To date, Nokia is not aware of any Bluetooth security attacks except for those made for demonstration purposes. We believe the real security threat is very small. However, consumers may take the following measures to address the Bluetooth security issues.
  • Set the device to "hidden" mode as instructed in the User's Guide. [Menu>Connectivity (8910i only)>Bluetooth>Bluetooth Setting>Hidden]. Personal devices like headsets can still connect to the phone, but intrusion is much more difficult since the hacker will have to know the Bluetooth address before establishing a connection.
  • If a user wants stronger security, they can simply "switch off" the Bluetooth functionality of their mobile phone. This will not affect other functionalities of the phone.

Please note that in the Nokia 810 car phone, it is not possible to switch off the Bluetooth or set the device to hidden mode. However, this device is only used in a car where the likelihood of a security threat is considered to be extremely small.

If you are a frequent Bluetooth user, and feel uncertain after taking the measures listed above, you may contact the Nokia Customer Care Line in your home country or an authorized Nokia Service Point for further guidance.

Denial-of-Service Attempts
Nokia is aware of conceptual Denial-of-Service (DoS) attempts against Bluetooth enabled devices and is carefully analyzing these incidents.

According to our analysis, the risk of a DoS attempt is very small. Even if a DoS attack was successful, there is no harm to the device. The affected device simply reboots itself, and is fully functional again. The DoS attempt does not damage the phone or view or extract any data from the device.
