can make Internet calls to other Internet calling users, and to people
with ordinary mobile phones and landlines. Internet calls made to other
people using Internet calling do not typically incur any additional
cost beyond what you are paying for Internet access, much in the same
way that you don’t pay for sending individual emails over the Internet
(check with your VoIP service provider for details). However, you will
be charged by your VoIP service provider for Internet calls to ordinary
landlines and mobiles. Remember that if you connect to the Internet via
3G instead of WLAN, you will also be charged by your network operator
for the amount of data used for the call. Check your data plan for more
detail.

No,
the Nokia Internet calling application cannot be downloaded or
installed separately. The only exception to this is the N80. You can
perform a firmware upgrade on the N80 to become an N80IE (Internet
Edition), which includes the Nokia Internet calling application.
A
firmware upgrade can be performed online on Nokia’s regional web sites
or by taking your phone to a Nokia Service centre. Please backup any
important data before attempting a firmware upgrade as it will erase
any user data stored on the phone.
The
following service providers offer downloadable 3rd party VoIP
applications that are compatible with one or more Nokia handsets:
Fring; Truphone; Gizmo; Challenger mobile; Sillyant; Please note that only certain handsets are supported by each provider. You can download and use Skype on the Nokia N800 Internet tablet and the Nokia N810. There are currently no versions of Skype available for use on Nokia Symbian S60 mobile phones. However, Skype is currently developing a Skype client for the Symbian platform. Please check Skype’s website for details.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a technology manages the routing of voice calls over the Internet.
Internet
calling and Voice over IP (VoIP) are different names for the same
technology. VoIP is the underlying technology, while Internet calling
is the term used in the phone's user interface.
a) an Internet calling capable Nokia mobile phone
b) a wireless broadband Internet connection (a WLAN or 3G mobile data connection) c) an account with a VoIP service provider d) an Internet calling client application installed on your phone. This can be Nokia's own Internet calling application or a third party application that you downloaded separately e) in the case of the Nokia Internet calling application, you also need to create a correctly configured SIP and Internet telephone profile The
Internet calling feature is not available on certain Nokia N95
handsets. Check with your network operator to see whether Internet
calling is supported on your phone.
The
Nokia N80 contains the SIP stack and does support 3rd party Internet
calling applications, but only the N80 IE (Internet Edition) contains
the Nokia Internet calling application. You can perform a firmware
upgrade to upgrade your Nokia N80 to a Nokia N80 Internet Edition.
STUN
is a system for improving Internet calling connections which take place
through a WLAN router. STUN helps to resolve NAT traversal problems by
detecting the routers external IP address and writing this into the SIP
packets which the phone sends.
There
are two versions of the Nokia Internet calling client. The second
release of the Nokia Internet calling client supports NAT transversal
using STUN, but the first release (found on the E60, E70 and early
versions of the E61: earlier than firmware version 3.0633.09.04) does
not support STUN. If you own an E61 and are experiencing problems
making Internet calls over WLAN, and your phone has the first release
of the Nokia Internet calling client, you should consider performing a
firmware upgrade as this could help resolve the problem.
Unfortunately,
there are currently no firmware upgrades for the E60 and E70 that
include the Release 2 version of the Nokia Internet calling client.
No, STUN settings cannot be accessed from the handset and therefore can not be edited manually.
ALG
works by allowing the router to read SIP packets and alter their
contents. Like STUN it is designed to make connections over NAT easier.
However, some early implementations of ALG can cause problems with
Internet calling. If you suspect that this is the case you should try
upgrading your router firmware or turning off this feature.
Typically, Internet calling uses the following Ports:
SIP: UDP 5060 RTP: typically UDP 5004-5005 However, although the SIP port is normally 5060, there is no real convention regarding the number of the RTP Port. So it is always best to check on the ports actually used by your service provider. The
Nokia WLAN client does not show your phone's IP address when connected.
However, your phone's MAC address can be displayed by entering
*#62209526# (*#MAC WLAN#) on the standby display. Most Routers can
either show which MAC address is linked to this IP address, or map
ports directly to a Mac address. Third Party software is also available
which can display your phone's IP address.
Can I connect more than one phone to an Internet calling service provider from a single WLAN router?
Some
service providers will allow you to connect multiple phones to a single
WLAN Router and receive calls on each of them. This is typically
achieved by configuring each phone to use different ports and then
setting Port Forwarding from the Router to each phone. Check with your
service provider for more details.
The
Nokia Internet calling client uses Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)
VoIP. SIP is an IETF standard and one of the leading protocols for
VoIP. SIP can be regarded as the enabler protocol for telephony and
VoIP services and it and currently powers most Internet telephony
solutions.
If
the message 'Internet call service not available' is displayed when you
open the Internet telephone application or try to establish an Internet
call, no valid Internet telephone profile is configured or the SIP
settings have been set incorrectly.
This message may also appear when you try to register into a VoIP service and there is no WLAN coverage for making an Internet call, or if the outgoing Internet call fails. I can't make Internet calls This troubleshooting guide will attempt to help you identify and resolve general problems related to Internet calling on Symbian S60 devices. Because this trouble-shooter is designed to cover all common problems associated with Internet calling, you will be asked a series of questions to identify the cause of the problem. Once the cause has been identified, you will then be given guidance on how to go about solving the problem. The first thing that needs to be determined is whether or not your phone is capable of making Internet calls. E51, E60, E61, E61i, E62, E65, E70, E90, N80IE, N81, N81 8GB, N82 Your phone is capable of making Internet calls. Your phone also contains the Nokia Internet calling client application. This means you have a choice of using the Nokia Internet calling application, or downloading and installing a 3rd party application from your service provider. Which kind of application are you using? Your
phone is capable of making Internet calls, and it is supported by one
or more 3rd party applications. However, your phone does not contain
the Nokia Internet calling application. This means you must download
and install a 3rd party application from a VoIP service provider to
make internet calls. Please note that only certain service providers
may support your particular phone model. Internet
calling capability on the Nokia N95 is dependant on your network
operator. You should check with your network operator to confirm
whether or not your N95 is capable of making Internet calls. Another
way to check this is to navigate to Menu > Tools and see if you can
find an item called Internet tel. Your phone is not capable of making Internet calls. To
make Internet calls using the Nokia Internet calling application, you
need to register and open an account with an Internet calling (VoIP)
service provider that supports the Nokia Internet calling application. To
make Internet calls using a 3rd party Internet calling (VoIP)
application, you still need to register and open an account with your
service provider. Please
download and install a 3rd party application that is compatible with
your phone model from your service provider to make Internet calls. Please register and create an account with an Internet calling (VoIP) service provider that supports the Nokia Internet calling application and your phone model to make Internet calls. Your
service provider should have supplied you with a number of settings
that you must use to configure a SIP and Internet calling profile on
your phone. Most
3rd party Internet calling service providers offer a number that you
can use to test whether or not the application is connected and working
correctly. The call is connected and I can hear the confirmation message The call is connected, but I cannot hear anything The call is not connected / the phone displays an error message Please
create an account with your service provider and make note of any
details such as a user name and password that they provide you with.
These details are required to set up the client and connect your phone
to your service provider's network. Please
use the settings you received from your VoIP service provider to create
a SIP and Internet calling profile to make Internet calls. Next, try to register with your VoIP service provider. You can check the registration status in Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > SIP settings (this may vary by device). Note that you must be connected to the Internet using the access point defined in your SIP profile to register. What status is shown in the SIP profile? Congratulations! You have successfully set up Internet calling. Sometimes
the call is connected, but the speech is only heard in one direction or
not at all. This usually occurs when making Internet calls over WLAN.
It is often linked to problems with Network Address Translation (NAT)
or firewall settings. A typical reason is that a VoIP client is behind
a NAT and not configured to use a STUN (Simple Traversal of UDP over
NAT) server to get the audio routed through the NAT. You
must be connected to the Internet to make Internet calls. First, check
to see if you are connected to the Internet via the access point that
your 3rd party application is set to use. A status of 'Registered' must be displayed in order to make Internet calls. A
status of 'Registered' in your SIP profile means that you are connected
to the Internet via the correct access point, and you have correctly
configured your SIP and Internet telephone profiles with your service
provider's settings. You are now ready to make an Internet call. Most
service providers offer a test number that you can dial to check if
everything is working correctly. The call is connected and I can hear the confirmation message The call is connected, but the call has no audio or only one-way audio The call is not connected / the phone displays an error message A status of 'Registered' must be displayed in order to make Internet calls. Check
with your VoIP service provider that your 3rd party Internet calling
application supports a means of NAT transversal such as STUN. First,
obtain your phone's MAC address by entering *#62209526# (*#MAC WLAN#)
onto the main screen of your phone. Next, log in to your WLAN/Internet
router's administration interface and use this MAC address to allocate
a fixed IP address for your phone on your WLAN router. Congratulations! You have successfully set up Internet calling. Sometimes
the call is connected, but the speech is only heard in one direction or
not at all. This usually occurs when making Internet calls over WLAN.
