Nokia Music

30 Second Clip
A 30 second clip of all music in Nokia Music Store is available to listen to for free, so that you can hear a portion of the track before you buy it. This is not downloaded to your computer.
3G
Data connection over a mobile telephone network which you can use to download tracks from Nokia Music Store to a compatible mobile device. 3G is generally faster than a GPRS connection.
A
AAC
One of the audio file formats supported by Nokia Music. The file extensions are .m4a, .mp4, .3gp and .aac. Tracks in this audio file format can be stored in the library, played, ripped from and burned to CD and transferred to a mobile device.
Administrator rights
In order to install Nokia Music on your PC, you need to have Administrator rights. If you are part of a network, contact the network administrator.
Album artwork
Image attached to a track and displayed when a track is viewed or played.
Audio file formats
A file format is a particular way to encode information for storage in a computer. Windows Media Audio file (WMA) is the format available in Nokia Music Store. Our tracks are encoded at 128 or 192 kbps and they are protected by Microsoft Windows Media Digital Rights Management. Nokia Music PC client will also play, burn, rip and transfer tracks encoded in AAC, MP3 and WAV file format.
Auto-transfer
A partnership can be set up between any compatible mobile device and Nokia Music. Everytime you connect the mobile device your PC will perform an automatic transfer, based on the settings defined in the Auto-transfer preferences.
B
Bit Rate
The bit rate indicates the quality and the size of the file. A higher bit rate means more data per second. The standard bit rates used in Nokia Music Store are 128 and 192 kbps.
Blank CD
A CD-r with no previous content. Can also refer to CD-rw, but if the CD has previously been used formatting is required.
Broadband
Generally refers to connections to the internet with much greater bandwidth than you can get with a dial-up modem. There is no specific definition of the speed of a broadband connection but, in general, any internet connection using DSL or via Cable-TV may be considered a broadband connection.
Buffering
Nokia Music downloads part of the stream before starting to play creating a buffer. If playing catches up to the end of the buffer, the stream will pause while further buffering occurs.
Burn
Saving copies of your tracks to a blank CD using a CD burner.
Burn list
List of tracks waiting to be burned to a blank CD. You can view the burnlist by clicking on the icon for blank CD in My devices.
C
Card Verification Code (CVC)
A security feature on credit cards. The code is made up of 3 numbers and can be found on the back of your card next to the signature.
Catalogue
Describes all the music available in Nokia Music Store. Streaming catalogue refers to all tracks that are available for streaming.
CD Burner
The hardware device necessary to burn CDs.
Compatible mobile device
This refers to a Nokia mobile device that has been approved for use with Nokia Music.
Cookie
A piece of information that a website puts in the memory of a device when a user visits the website. Typically, a cookie records the user's preferences when using a particular site. The user can delete cookies by clearing the cache.
Current downloads
The area of Nokia Music where tracks being downloaded from Nokia Music Store are displayed.
D
Default payment method
A credit or debit card you have saved in your Nokia Music Store account, from which all Instant purchases will automatically be debited.
Digital Rights Management (DRM)
This technology can help protect the copyright of artists and record labels and other rights holders by helping prevent illegal and unauthorised copying. Customers who buy tracks from this service can make personal CD copies of all tracks purchased and also transfer them to a compatible mobile device.
Download
The download process transfers the tracks from Nokia Music Store to your computer or mobile device. You can play downloads on your PC or mobile device, burn them to a blank CD and transfer them between a PC and a compatible mobile device.

Equalizer
A control to change the sound response of the music being played, for example the amount of bass and treble.
F
Firewall
A firewall is an IT security device. Firewalls can either be hardware or software-based, or both. If you have a Firewall installed on your PC, you may need to configure it in order to allow the use of Nokia Music Store. Refer to the PC troubleshooting section for more information.

Genre
Classification or type of music, for example rock, world or pop.
GPRS
Data connection over a mobile telephone network which you can use to download tracks from Nokia Music Store to a compatible mobile device. GPRS is generally slower then a 3G connection.
I
Instant Purchase
Purchasing a music track without needing to have pre-paid credit.
Internet Service Provider (ISP)
A company, business or an organization that provides access to the internet in some form.
K
Kilobits per second (kbit/sec or kbps)
Files with a high bit rate are larger but better quality than low bit rate files. The standard bit rates used in Nokia Music Store are 192 and 128 kbps.
L
License (Play, Burn, Transfer)
Tracks purchased from Nokia Music Store are delivered with a license. This license determines the rights you have to play, burn or transfer the track to a compatible mobile device.
M
Megabyte (MB)
Tracks downloaded from Nokia Music Store are typically around 3-6 MB in size.
Menu
Pressing this button allows you to perform various actions within the application such as opening a file or access the Options dialog.
Metadata
See Track details.
Mini mode
A display mode in Nokia Music that reduces the window to the size of the player. Nokia Music Store is not availble in mini mode.
Mix Me
Clicking on Mix Me in Nokia Music Store automatically streams a random selection of tracks from that artist or genre.
MP3
One of the audio file formats supported by Nokia Music. The file extension is .mp3. Tracks in this audio file format can be stored in the library, played, ripped from and burned to CD and transferred to a mobile device.
My Account
When signed in to Nokia Music Store, pressing this button gives you access to your account settings.
My devices
The area where you can switch between your connected mobile devices and, your local PC collection, and inserted Audio CDs.
My music
All of the music available on My PC, on any currently connected compatible mobile devices and on any audio CDs currently inserted.
My PC
One of the options in the My devices area. This view shows all music and playlists stored locally on your PC.

Newsletter
A regular e-mail informing you of new releases and special offers available to Nokia Music Store customers. You can sign up for the newsletter during the registration process and opt out at any time
Nokia Care
The point of contact for problems which can not be solved in the self help troubleshooting.
Nokia Music
Collective name describes all music activities in Nokia, including the PC client, Nokia Music Store and the Nseries device Music Player.
Nokia Music Store
The store within Nokia Music. Available both within the PC client and on a compatible mobile device.
Nokia Music Store account
You must have a Nokia Music Store account in order to purchase downloads or subscribe to Unlimited Streaming subscription. You can join Nokia Music Store and create your account by clicking Join now.

Operating System (OS)
A set of computer programs that manage the hardware and software resources of a computer. The operating system forms a platform for other system software and for application software. Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS are some of the most popular Operating Systems.
Options dialog
A dialog which contains a series of tabs which allows you to change your user preferences within Nokia Music.
P
Password
A personal code you choose to identify yourself when signing in to Nokia Music Store. This code must be a minimum of 6 characters long and no longer than 20 characters and cannot contain any spaces.
PIN
The number printed on a voucher from Nokia Music or campaign collaborators. Campaign specific terms and conditions apply to PIN's.
The player
The area that shows the currently playing track and has all the controls you’ll need for playing tracks from Nokia Music Store or your My Music collection.
Play all
If you click a play all button, and you are subscribed to Unlimited Streaming Subscription, all content in that box will be added to your playlist within Nokia Music and can be streamed from there.
Playlist
A way of collecting your music in one list. There are two different types of playlists supported in Nokia Music; Automated playlists and manually created playlists. The manually created playlists in Nokia Music can list tracks from your PC library, your compatible mobile devices and the Nokia Music Store streaming catalogue. The automated playlists will be created based on for example most played or recently purchased.
Pre-paid credit
You can choose to top up your Nokia Music account with pre-paid credits, instead of using Instant purchase. When purchasing larger pre-paid credit packages you will get discounts.
Privacy Policy
A privacy policy is a document placed on a website informing users about how the website deals with a user's personal information. The privacy policy generally contains information regarding what information is collected from a user’s usage and whether or how a user's information is shared with Nokia, its affiliates and third parties. Often it also explains how or if the website uses cookies and web bugs.
Proxy Server
A Proxy Server sits in between a Client and the real Server that a Client is trying to use. Clients are sometimes configured to use a Proxy Server, usually an HTTP server. The Client makes all of its requests from the Proxy Server, which then makes requests from the real server and passes the result back to the Client. Proxy servers are commonly established on Local Area Networks. If you access Nokia Music Store through a proxy server and experience issues installing Nokia Music or downloading, you should contact your Administrator.
Purchased music
The list of music downloads purchased by a customer, which is accessible by signing in to their account. If there are still available licenses, tracks or albums in the library they can be re-downloaded at no additional cost, generally twice.
Q
Quality
An option in the burn options dialog. It sets the bit-rate used when ripping tracks in Nokia Music.
The Queue
The area of Nokia Music that contains a list of tracks waiting to be played.
R
Recommended
A recommender built in to Nokia Music which will give you recommendations based on the track you are currently listening to.
Re-download
You can re-download the music you already purchased via the Re-download button in My account » Purchased music. This option is available on both PC and mobile device.
Re-licensing
The process of acquiring an additional license from Nokia Music license server for an existing track in your library. This option is available on both PC and mobile device.
Rights & Information
Click on this link for a specific product to see detailed information on its license. The number of plays, burns and transfers will be indicated here. You will also see whether the product is available on the PC as well as the mobile device.
Rip
Copying content from an Audio CD to your PC or a compatible mobile device.
Rip and go
Copying content from an Audio CD to your compatible mobile device.
Router
A special-purpose hardware device that handles the connection between 2 or more Packet-Switched networks. Routers spend all their time looking at the source and destination addresses of the packets passing through them and deciding which route to send them on.

Shuffle
Control for playing back the tracks in the queue in a random order. Can be switched on or off at the bottom of the queue.
Sign in
Pressing this button allows you to sign in to you Nokia Music Store account.
Sign out
When signed in to Nokia Music Store, pressing this button allows you to sign out.
Sound card
A piece of circuitry you can add to your computer that allows it to play and record sound. Sound cards have outputs on the back in a variety of formats that enable sound to travel to headphones, speakers, stereos, portable players, mobile devices and so on. Refer to system requirements for more details on what you need to be able to use Nokia Music Store.
Stereo
Two channels of audio. When you listen to something in stereo, different sounds come out of the left and right speakers or headphones. Since stereo tracks contain twice the information of an equivalent mono file, they are twice the size.
Streaming

Facility to play music while connected to Nokia Music Store with an active internet connection.When streaming the tracks will not be downloaded or saved to your PC and you recieve no licenses to burn or transfer them.
In Nokia Music Store, you need to subscribe to the Unlimited Streaming Subscription in order to be able to play streams.

Track details
Supplementary data related to a track, for instance artist, album name and genre. Sometimes referred to as metadata.
Transfer
Process of moving tracks or playlists between your PC and a connected mobile device. There are both manual transfer and Auto-transfer.

Unlimited Streaming Subscription (USS)
Sign up on a monthly basis to be able to listen to as much music as you like from Nokia Music Store, while being connected to the Internet.
Username
You choose this name as your unique identifier for Nokia Music Store. The username must contain a minimum of 6 characters and no more than 20 characters and cannot include any spaces.
W
WAV
One of the audio file formats supported by Nokia Music. The file extension is .wav. Tracks in this audio file format can be stored in the library, played, ripped from and burned to CD and transferred to a mobile device. This format offers high audio quality at the expense of large file size.
Wi-Fi/Wireless connection
See WLAN.
Wishlist
The wishlist feature enables customers to compile a list of tracks to be downloaded later. When the user signs in to their Nokia Music Store account, the wishlist will appear and can be downloaded.
WLAN
It refers to wireless local area networks (WLAN), which can be used both by your PC and on some types of mobile devices. You will need to have access to a wireless router to be able to use WLAN.
WM DRM
WMA
One of the audio file formats supported by Nokia Music. The file extensions are .wma and .asf. Tracks in this audio file format can be stored in the library, played, ripped from and burned to CD and transferred to a mobile device. This is the format for tracks purchased from Nokia Music Store.
