Nokia 6310i Interactive Tutorial

GENERAL

Can I upgrade my Nokia 6310 software to get Nokia 6310i functionality?
No, you cannot. The tri-band functionality of the Nokia 6310i (GSM900/1800/1900) is partly implemented in the hardware (new RF part, different components, changed antenna) and related software.

What does SAR information mean specifically?
SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate, which is a measure of the amount of radio wave energy absorbed by the body when using a mobile phone. Scientifically based international recommendations and standards are in force, governing the maximum SAR levels. All Nokia products are designed to comply with relevant recommendations and standards.

Where can I find SAR information? Is it available for everybody?
For products that start shipping from October 2001 onwards, SAR information will be included in the user guide and as part of the technical information on the Nokia web site. By the end of March 2002, we plan to publish on the Nokia web site the SAR information for existing products still in production.

As part of the product training materials available to you, we start adding information on SAR and the measured SAR figure for the product. For example, the SAR value for this product is 0.82 W/kg.

SAR information is being made available as a means to enable you to make an informed choice. Until recently there were several accepted SAR test measurement methods in use. A harmonised test method is now available, and we are now able to respond to your questions on SAR with information according to established standards.

Is a phone with lower SAR values safer?
The SAR test is a pass/fail test, and hence there is no scientific basis to suggest 'relative' safety based on SAR. Differences in SAR values do not imply that one phone is less safe than another.

Do all Nokia phones meet SAR standards?
Yes, all Nokia phone models have passed tests for specific absorption rate exposure limits.

What kind of mobile Internet services does the Nokia 6310i support over WAP?
The Nokia 6310i supports an open WAP technology standard for mobile Internet based content. WAP 1.2.1 (Conformance June 2000) and its specification contains WAP over GPRS, push service message indication, direct calling, direct editing, downloadable calendar and contact items, cookies, optimised protocol stack for interactive mobile services, and support for both textual and graphical content. It also supports Java MIDlet downloads.

JAVA TECHNOLOGY

What's the benefit of downloadable applications in my Nokia 6310i?
You can enrich your phone functionality with the applications you need to manage your work and free time, like business applications as well as interactive and graphical games. Also, different kinds of downloadable applications (e.g. virtual pets and background animations) allow you to personalise your phone. Java applications are executed locally in the device, providing convenient usage thanks to a fast response without network delay. Nokia 6310i supports downloading of Java applications both over the WAP connection and by using PC Suite.

How many applications I can download and store in my Nokia 6310i?
The memory reserved for the Java applications in 6310i is dynamic. There is a minimum of 128 kB of user memory. In addition, 50 kB from a memory pool shared with e.g. the phonebook can be used. The maximum size of a MIDlet is 30 kB. Therefore you can download a minimum of 4 MIDlets applications in the phone. Of course if the MIDlets downloaded are smaller in size, there is space for more applications. The applications in the phone can be erased and new applications can be downloaded instead.

Where do I find Java applications to download?
Many parties will be offering Java applications. Operators will play a key role in ensuring that their subscribers have easy access to downloadable applications. Club Nokia will offer downloadable Java applications starting in summer 2002.

Are all Java applications compatible with my Nokia 6310i phone?
The Nokia 6310i supports the downloading of Java MIDP1.0 compliant applications.

What is the security of Java applications in the Nokia 6310i?
To make sure that the Java applications do not expose the phone user's sensitive data, the applications cannot read the phone user's private data on the device. For example, the Java applications cannot access the phonebook, calendar, text messages and call register. In fact, the Java applications can only access very limited phone functionality specifically opened to the Java platform by Nokia. The only data that Java applications can access is the data that the application itself has stored in the device. It is important to note that if you input (using the keypad) information to the application, the application can potentially send that over the network connection. Thus you should not give sensitive information to a Java application unless you trust the application.

The Java application execution is insulated from the native functionality of the phone. If there is a problem with the Java application, the native functionality of the phone is not affected. In case of a problem, the Java application execution is stopped. You can also always stop the execution of a Java application by pushing the red key ("stop the call key").

BLUETOOTH

What type of Bluetooth data applications can I use with the Nokia 6310i?
The Nokia 6310i is optimised for people who desire freedom and flexibility in data communication. The Nokia 6310i lets you browse the Internet, download and send e-mail, send faxes and transfer files. The Nokia 6310i also facilitates the synchronisation of calendar and contact data between the phone and compatible PC office applications via the Nokia PC Suite software. With Bluetooth you can easily exchange business cards or other contact and calendar information with other Bluetooth enabled phones.

What type of Bluetooth audio equipment can I use with the Nokia 6310i?
The Nokia 6310i supports Bluetooth audio functionality. The Nokia 6310i will be compatible with the Nokia Wireless Headset and Nokia Wireless Car Kit and other Bluetooth audio products being developed according to the Bluetooth-Headset or Bluetooth-Handsfree Profile specification.

WALLET

What can I do with the wallet?
The wallet application enables you to make convenient on-line transactions via a WAP browser, i.e. you can fetch the information from the wallet to the WML browser. You can also use the wallet for storing your personal information, e.g. user names, passwords and numbers.

How is security guaranteed in the wallet application?
The data inside the wallet is protected by a user definable wallet code. In the transaction itself, in addition to the normal GSM/WAP security measures, the Nokia 6310i also supports the security module (WIM) for encrypted digital signature. In this product, the WIM is located in the SIM card.

ACCESSORIES

Are the Nokia 6210 and Nokia 6310 accessories compatible with the Nokia 6310i?
Yes, most of the accessories are compatible, giving you easy upgrade possibilities. For example, you can use the same car kit with the Nokia 6310i as with the Nokia 6210 and 6310.

Are there any new accessories for the Nokia 6310i?
Yes, the Travel Charger ACP-12 and the Nokia PC Suite 4.8 (to be updated with 4.81 including Nokia Application Installer).

Is it possible to save voice tags in the Nokia Wireless Car Kit's memory?
No. The voice tags that you can activate using the remote control button are stored in the phone's memory.

Can I charge my phone while it is connected to the Nokia Wireless Car Kit?
The Nokia Wireless Car Kit sales package does not include a mobile charger, and, as the connection between the phone and the Wireless Car Kit does not require cables, there is no need for a mobile holder with charging. The phone can, however, be charged normally with the compatible Nokia Mobile Charger also when connected to the Wireless Car Kit.

NOKIA CONNECTIVITY CARD DTL-4

What can I do with the Nokia Connectivity Card?
You can connect your Nokia 6310i phone and laptop (PC) wirelessly. While connected, you can handle e-mail, browse the web, send faxes and carry out address book synchronisation easily without a physical cable connection using the Nokia 6310i phone. You can also use the Nokia 6310i as a GSM modem for connecting wirelessly to a computer within a 10-metre range. The Nokia 6310i supports CSD, HSCSD and GPRS data.

What is the difference between the Bluetooth Software Suite and Nokia PC Suite?
The Bluetooth Software Suite (as part of the Connectivity Card DTL-4 sales package CD-Rom) installs Bluetooth functionality on a PC and enables Bluetooth connectivity between a PC and Bluetooth compatible device (such as the Nokia 6310i). The Nokia PC Suite for the Nokia 6310i offers added value features for business and leisure (e.g. synchronisation and ringing tone composing).
