Terms and abbreviations
Bearer Services These are used when data transmission services are needed, e.g. for sending text messages or accessing WAP. There are different kinds of bearer services available.
Countdown Timer The phone has a built-in timer that allows you to set the phone to sound an alarm after a specified period of time. The Countdown timer contains two separate timers: a normal timer and an interval timer. The timer setup consists of hours and minutes.
CSD Circuit Switched Data = GSM data/normal data call. In conventional GSM networks, data transmission speeds could reach a maximum 9.6. kbps. This was adequate in the early days when mobile phones were primarily used for voice calls. But the structure of the GSM network makes it possible to more effectively utilise radio frequencies, which are divided into time slots.
Dual-Band Some operators transmit on a radio frequency band of 900 MHz, whereas others use 1800 MHz. Dual-band phones can operate on both frequencies. This gives you more choice when travelling, where agreements cover both kinds of network.
EGSM Extended GSM. The EGSM operating frequency extends 10 MHz lower on the 900 MHz band. Both the phone and the network must support this feature.
Infrared Some phones have an infrared eye built into them. This can be used to transmit data to another device with an infrared eye, without needing a cable connection. If you want to use your mobile for sending computer data, or to synchronise the contacts in your phone book with a compatible phone or to swap ringing tones with another infrared user, it's a big advantage.
OTA Over the Air. It is possible to send and receive, for example, bookmarks or WAP settings Over-The-Air as Smart Messages (SMS used as a transfer media).
PC SUITE The Nokia PC Suite is a synchronisation application that allows you to synchronise calendar items and contacts between your phone and your PC Personal Information Manager (PIM), thus keeping both your phone and PC PIM up-to-date.
Picture Editor You can use the picture editor to create, edit and save picture messages and clip-art or edit pictures that already exist on the phone. You can also edit pictures in the picture messages menu by editing text.
Push Service message indicator You can receive a service message (pushed message) with a short header and a link to a specific WAP service from your service provider. You can turn this service 'on' or 'off'.
Stopwatch Some phones have a built-in stopwatch that can be used for measuring times in different sports, for example. The stopwatch is accurate to one-hundredth of a second. The stopwatch tracks time for up to 10 hours maximum.
Training icons In the calendar, you can create repeated calendar notes, for example for weekly training sessions, using only one memory slot. You can simultaneously send those notes to many recipients by using the Send to many option, and you can send the notes via your text message service or via IR. This new function in calendar notes allows you to save activity-specific Training Icons. There are 20 preinstalled Training Icons which represent global sporting activities from jogging to horseracing.
Thermometer The thermometer is a feature which enables you to measure the approximate temperature of your surroundings both in Celsius and Fahrenheit. The temperature is rounded to the nearest whole number. The Thermometer is not intended for professional use.
WAP Wireless Application Protocol. An open global standard for total mobile solutions, including communication between a mobile handset and Internet-based content. WAP-based technology enables the design of advanced, interactive and real-time mobile services, such as mobile banking or Internet-based news services, which can be used on digital mobile phones or other mobile devices.
