What are the available bearers for SMS and what options do they provide?
The available bearers for SMS are GPRS and GSM Data.
There is a setting in the phone that controls SMS sending. The setting has two options:
1) Default. Always send the SMS over GSM signaling. If the GPRS connection is open, then GPRS will be suspended while sending the SMS.
2) Automatic selection of the transmission path. The phone will use SMS over GPRS when available; when not available, GSM signaling will be used.

How can you change the character case or choose to use numeric mode or predictive text input?
In alpha editing mode (only for Latin characters), a short press of the # key changes the character case (upper/lower), a long press of the # key toggles between numeric mode and alphamode, the 0 key is a space and line feed, and special characters can be found with the * key. A double press of the # key enables/disables predictive text input.

Is it possible to send an SMS message to multiple recipients with the Nokia 5100?
All messages can be sent to multiple recipients either by selecting them one-by-one or by using Send to many. However, Send to many is not available in MMS.

What are the different options in the Messages menu?
In the Messaging application users can create, send, receive, view, edit and organize
  • Short messages (including Picture messages)
  • Multimedia messages
  • E-mail messages (E-mail over SMS)
  • Smart messages

  • What is the average size of an MMS message that can be sent by the Nokia 5100?
The average size of an MMS is around 10 kB with text and default size image (122 x 96), and 30 kB with text and images.

What is the maximum size of a picture that can be sent by the Nokia 5100?
Images in supported formats up to VGA size (640 x 480 pixels) can be zoomed onto the screen, and the same messages can be sent from the phone to a compatible device. In terms of image data volume, all 45 kB of the message can be used by one single image.

How much text can be included in an MMS message sent from the Nokia 5100?
The only limit to the text amount is the message size. The Nokia 5100 supports a maximum of 45 kB per message, so if a message contains only text, several thousands of characters can be supported in one MMS message.

How many MMS messages can be stored in the Nokia 5100?
Several, depending on the number of applications, images, polyphonic tones, etc. that the user has downloaded. Please refer to the shared memory section of this document.

What are the image and audio formats used in Nokia 5100 MMS?
For images: JPEG, GIF, BPM and PNG
For sound: polyphonic MIDI ringing tones

What happens if I receive an AMR encoded voiceclip from the Nokia 7650 phone?
Nokia 5100 supports polyphonic ringing tone sounds. Other formats will be discarded, as they cannot be played back to the end user.

    How does mobile Chat work?
The Nokia 5100 supports Chat based on standard SMS. This feature works by allowing the user to type in the number of the person they want to chat with; the user can specify a 'Chat nickname.' The user then enters the Chat editor, where any text keyed in is sent to the other party. Incoming messages from the other person will pop up on the display at the top of the chat history (all the previously written messages from both persons). Chat messages are not saved on the SIM card.

    What are Smart Messages?
Smart Messages allow the phone to be configured Over The Air. That way configuring e.g. WAP, GPRS and MMS access points and other settings is easier for the end user as it minimizes the manual entering of the settings.

Can you send an MMS message to a phone that does not support the MMS feature?
If the receiver is using a non-MMS enabled phone, the network operator can implement legacy support services. In this case, an SMS with an Internet address and password may be sent to the old phones (network dependent). The recipient can then use a normal web browser to view the MMS message. Network operator support is also required for the basic MMS store and forward services. The operator may also want to cooperate with content providers to provide end users with added MMS content.

Which MMS functions does the Nokia 5100 support?
The Nokia 5100 supports sending, receiving and forwarding of MMS messages up to 45 kBytes. In addition to media contents, VAS content, such as SP MIDI ringing tones, and wallpapers can be delivered to the phone using MMS. The service provider can make the VAS content available for preview on WAP and have the delivery done over MMS. This makes the Nokia 5100 an interesting platform also for service and content providers. Selected copyrighted content can be forward blocked to protect the interests of the content provider.

Is the Nokia 5100 compatible with other MMS phones?
Nokia 5100 MMS is interoperable with other MMS phones following the open 3GPP and WAP forum MMS standards and the industry common MMS Conformance Document.
